So you want to be a freelance writer?

There are a lot of perks to being a freelance writer. I can:
  • Work my schedule around everyone else as needed.
  • Work early or late if needed.
  • Get paid for each task I complete.
  • Know that each work day brings something new.

Of course there are downsides, too. The negatives of being a freelance writer are that I:

  • Work my schedule around everyone else as needed.
  • Work early or late if needed.
  • Get paid for each task I complete.
  • Know that each work day brings something new.
Huh? What? Aren't those the same lists?

You bet they are. Freelance writers have to go into their career choice with a "glass half full" mentality. If you look at the glass as half empty, it'll drive you nuts. You'll worry about not working enough, working too much, sleeping too late, getting up too early, not getting paid enough for each job, or worrying about what the next day will bring. A positive attitude goes a long way for a freelance writer.

Approaching freelance writing as a part-time career choice first will give you a better idea of what to expect without the fear of a mortgage payment looming overhead while you learn the business by trial and error.  You'll write stories or articles and people will pay you. How much more do you have Will you assign each an account number? How will you bill? What are your payment terms? What if they don't pay on time, or never pay at all?

We'll address those things here, so check back often. But today's lesson, kiddies, is this:

As you go through life, my friend,
Whatever be your goal,
Keep your eye upon the doughnut
And not upon the hole.
 (~ Unknown)

So if you don't already have one, get a doughnut goal. Start small. Set a goal of reading one book related to freelance writing, or reading one article about the topic you want to write about, or take a writing class online. After accomplishing that goal, set another, then another. Pretty soon, you'll be writing more often; and we all know that practice makes perfect.

  1. Good advice for beginners in any area. An example of a donut is particularly interesting. I recently found a professional service freelance writer opportunity. It will help every beginner to get the necessary tips and examples in any field of activity, but the most useful for writers, bloggers and ordinary students.
